Why Composite in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma sun is what kills wood decks

In Tulsa, a wood deck doesn't usually rot first. It bakes. A few summers of hundred-degree afternoons and hard UV turn a new pine deck gray, open up checks and splits along the grain, and lift screws out of the boards. Keeping it looking good means a weekend of washing and staining every year or two.

Capped composite is built for exactly that. A dense core is wrapped in a bonded polymer shell that holds its color and won't soak up water, so the boards don't split, splinter, or need a finish. Your maintenance becomes a garden hose and the occasional scrub with soapy water. Then winter comes, with its freeze-thaw swings and the occasional ice storm, and composite shrugs that off too.

As a Tulsa deck builder, we treat the boards as the finish, not the whole job. Composite spans differently than wood, so the framing underneath has to be built to the manufacturer's tables, with tighter joist spacing, joist tape, and a flashed ledger. That framing is what the board warranty assumes, and it is what lets a composite deck actually last 25 years or more.

Choosing a Board

Picking composite for Tulsa conditions

Every brand makes good boards. The right one for your deck depends on where the sun hits it and how you'll use it.

Color and heat

Lighter grays and tans stay noticeably cooler than dark browns. On west- and south-facing decks we usually go lighter and add shade over the seating area.

Capped, not uncapped

Older uncapped composite faded and grew mildew. Today's capped boards resist fading and staining and carry long manufacturer warranties.

Good, better, best

Trex and TimberTech each make an entry line, a mid line, and a top line. Higher tiers add richer grain, more colors, and longer warranties. Browse the Trex catalog →

PVC for wet spots

Fully synthetic PVC boards are the pick around pools and in shaded corners that stay damp after a storm.

Hidden fasteners

Grooved boards on concealed clips give a clean, screw-free surface with even gaps across the whole deck.

Railing to match

Composite, aluminum, or cable railing in a color that works with your boards, with post-cap and riser lighting if you want it.

Composite vs. Wood

The honest math

We build both, so here it is straight: composite costs more on day one. It wins every year after that.

  • No staining or sealing, ever. A wood deck in Oklahoma sun needs it every year or two
  • No splinters, popped screws, or split boards to chase down
  • Capped boards carry 25 to 50 year fade and stain warranties from the manufacturer
  • A damaged board can be replaced without redoing the deck
  • Buyers see "composite deck" and know it's one less thing to maintain

Your proposal can price both materials side by side, so you decide with your actual numbers in front of you.

Composite Decking FAQ

What Tulsa homeowners ask about composite

Is composite decking worth it in Tulsa?

For most Tulsa homeowners, yes. Composite costs more up front than pressure-treated pine, but Oklahoma sun grays and checks a wood deck quickly, and keeping it looking good means staining or sealing every year or two. Capped composite needs none of that. Over ten or fifteen years the cost gap narrows a lot, and your proposal shows both options side by side so you can decide with real numbers.

Does composite decking get too hot in Oklahoma summers?

Dark boards in full afternoon sun do get hot. Lighter colors run noticeably cooler, some board lines are made specifically to stay cooler, and a pergola or covered section over the seating area makes the biggest difference of all. If your deck faces south or west, we plan for heat during design.

How does composite decking hold up to hail?

Nothing outdoors is hail-proof. Composite doesn't split or splinter the way weathered wood can, and a damaged board can be swapped without touching the rest of the deck. The bigger risk in a Tulsa storm is the wind, which is why we put as much attention into the framing and connectors as into the boards.

Which composite decking brands do you install in Tulsa?

We install the major national brands, including Trex and TimberTech, plus premium PVC lines for pool decks and spots that stay damp. We bring samples to your consultation so you can see the colors on your own house, in your own light. You can also browse the Trex catalog here on our site.

Do I need a permit for a composite deck in Tulsa?

The decking material doesn't change whether you need a permit. The structure does. Most attached or raised decks need a building permit from the City of Tulsa or from your suburb, such as Broken Arrow, Jenks, Bixby, or Owasso. We prepare the plans, pull the permit, and schedule inspections on every build.
